The EU-India project: Cooperating to improve road safety and efficiency in India

December 2005 – May 2007, funded through EC Directorate General Information Society & Media

India has one of the highest road accident rates in the world – more than 80,000 people are killed every year. Due to the phenomenal growth in the number of vehicles in the country, the need to upgrade India’s traffic management systems has become pressing. With traffic speeds in cities being reduced to a crawl during most parts of the day and accident rates showing no sign of decreasing, the need for smoother, safer road transport is greater than ever.

The EU-India project aimed to respond to this need, introducing ITS solutions as a tool for improving road safety and the efficiency of the Indian transport system. Given the vibrant Indian automobile, electronics and ICT industries and the country’s highly skilled labour force, the prospects for ITS development and deployment in India are good. Bringing together European and Indian stakeholders from public authorities, industry and the research sector, the project aimed to define the key enablers for ITS deployment in India, focusing particularly on Intelligent Integrated Safety Systems (eSafety).
